Strategies for a diversified organic pork production
The overall objective is to identify appropriate strategies for a diversified organic pork production with superior sensory quality characteristics based on pigs foraging in the cropping systems. Three different “types” of slaughter pigs will be investigated: Entire male pigs slaughtered before sexual maturity, female pigs slaughtered at more than 100 kg live weight, and sows slaughtered after weaning of the first litter. Specific objectives are:
- To investigate how the performance, health and meat quality of entire male pigs, slaughtered at a low live weight, are affected by genotype
- To investigate how the performance, health and meat quality of female growing pigs are affected by genotype and feeding strategy
- To investigate how the performance, health and meat quality of first parity sows are affected by genotype
